Section Scholarships
 

In addition to the scholarships listed on this page, Section members may be eligible for the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships. Each year, The Ninety-Nines award several Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships to qualified members for advanced flight training or courses in specialized branches of aviation. The following are Southwest Section chapters that offer scholarships:

  • Coyote Country Chapter 99s - We are offering both the Pam Van Der Linden Memorial Scholarship and the Mary Santosuosso Aviation Scholarship. Both are $1,000 for advanced ratings and your application makes you eligible for both scholarships.   • Imperial So-Lo 99s: Two scholarships--1) Captain Semmes scholarship: $500 to a male or female based on essay/need, Imperial County, CA resident. Due in November.
    The Bob Douthitt Memorial Scholarship- This $1,000 scholarship is established for a licensed pilot seeking a higher rating.  There must be two or more recommendations, which includes one from a certified flight instructor.  He or she must be a United States citizen. Must include a personal statement about why you are working toward this rating and goals for your future flying, and a photo of yourself.  A statement from your flight instructor must be included with the application. http://www.iplsolo99s.org/bob_douthitt1.html

    The 2004 Charotte Hammon scholarship winner is Imperial Valley resident Susie Grundler. Susie is a flight instructor for Flight Co located in Brawley. Susie will use the scholarship money on her rotocraft rating.

  • Long Beach 99s: This scholarship is open to women in the South Bay area of Los Angeles working on a pilot license, pilot revalidation or further ratings.

  • Marin 99s: $500 "Wing Up" Check Ride Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funding for the initial (private) or next level (instrument, commercial, etc.) check ride to support the dreams of women embracing aviation either as a personal passion or as a career. Application criteria includes: residency within 100 miles of Marin County Airport and the applicant must be eligible for the rating being applied for (ie: number of hours required), and have completed the written requirements for the rating.   • Monterey Bay 99s - Two annual scholarships for a student pilot and an advanced pilot who are at least 18 years old and resident of Monterey or Santa Cruz County. Application due about December. For additional information and an application, please visit the Monterey chapter Web site.

  • Mount Diablo 99s - One $1,250 scholarship for an addition rating or certificate -- due August 15. Criteria includes: private pilot license, current medical, must live within 50 NM of Concord Buchanan Airport, and be a member of The 99s.   • Mount Shasta 99s: A $500 scholarship to a female resident of Shasta, Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Tehama, Glenn or Butte Counties. The scholarship can be used by the recipient to obtain the private pilot license, or toward an advanced rating to further her pursuit of an aviation career.   • Phoenix 99s: Two $1,500 annual scholarships for female student pilots. Arizona residency required. Details and an application are on the Phoenix Web site For additional information, please contact phoenix99s@yahoo.com

  • Reno Area 99s: Three scholarships: one $3,000 for an advanced rating (applicant must hold a private pilot license), one $1,500, and one $1,000. The latter two scholarship can be used for a private pilot rating and the applicant must hold a current medical certificate and completed first solo flight. Other application criteria includes: residency within 75 miles of Reno, NV, resident of the area for at least one year, and has not been a recipient of any Reno Area 99s scholarships the last 3 years.   • Reno High Sierra 99s: Two scholarships--one $2,000 for a female student pilot and one $3,000 for a female advanced rating pilot. Scholarships are limited to female pilots who reside and fly out of any airport within 80 nautical miles of Reno-Tahoe International airport. Student pilots must have soloed by the application deadline. Advanced pilots must have already completed at least 5 hours towards advanced rating/license. Applications are available March 10 and the deadline is April 30. Personal interviews by a panel of 5 are conducted in May. The scholarship is awarded in June at our annual scholarship banquet.   • Rio Colorado Chapter: The Rio Colorado Chapter 99s is offering three different scholarships in the amount of $1,000 in 2007 for aspiring aviatrixes in the Lake Havasu or Bullhead City area. For more details- http://www.riocolorado99s.org/Scholarships.htm

  • SACRAMENTO VALLEY CHAPTER 99s: SHIRLEY LEHR/BETTY ALAIR MEMORIAL AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP $1,000.00
    The applicant must be a female who is actively pursuing flight training, has soloed and passed her FAA Written Examination and must live within 99 NM of Sacramento Executive Airport. Considerations include financial need,
    letters of recommendation, and a personal interview with our scholarship
    committee held at Sacramento Executive Airport. Award moneys will be
    distributed directly to the recipient's flight school.
    Applications are available on www.sacramento99s.org and must be postmarked
    by April 30, 2008.

    • San Fernando Valley 99s: Three annual scholarships available to men and women who want to pursue careers in Aviation. Criteria: 18 years old and live in greater Los Angeles Area. For additional information and an application, please visit the San Fernando Valley chapter Web site..

    • San Gabriel Valley 99s: Mt. San Antonio College scholarship $500 -awarded to a female Mt SAC student in the professional pilot program. Chosen by the department co-chair...also a member of our chapter.
      Jean Bustos scholarship $500 -awarded to a mature women pilot to be used towards flying. In memory of Jean Bustos, a member of the San Gabriel Valley 99's
      Linda Hayden Memorial Future Woman Pilot scholarship $750 -awarded to a FWP to be used towards flight training. In memory of Linda Hayden, a member of the San Gabriel Valley 99's

    • San Luis Obispo 99s: The SLO 99s are awarding scholarships to San Luis Obispo County women interested in becoming pilots. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist with either obtaining the private pilot license or any advanced rating. Applicant must be a woman at least 17 years of age residing in San Luis Obispo County with at least 10 hours logged toward a private pilot license, passed the written portion of the exam for the rating for which they are training and hold a current medical certificate.     • Santa Barbara 99s: Joan Steinberger Aviation Scholarships --- Helps a Southwest Section female student pilot complete her Private Pilot Certificate and a Southwest Section certificated pilot obtain an advanced rating or certificate.     • Santa Rosa 99s: Annual scholarship for a women pilot who lives within 150 miles of STS--Sonoma County Airport. Application due about May. For additional information and an application, please visit the Santa Rosa Chapter Web site.

    • Sedona Red Rockettes: $1000-1,500. Applicants must be from AZ with a valid medical and a minimum of 10 hours student pilot flight instruction (if a student) in the past six months to apply.     • Ventura County 99s: Future Women Pilots' Scholarship--The chapter offers financial assistance of up to $1,500 each, to be awarded to women student pilots--one (or more) awarded in the winter and one (or more) in summer.
      Criteria: Applicant must be a female student pilot, resident of the greater Ventura County area, and working towards her Private Pilot's Certificate.

    Other Scholarship Opportunities
    Members of the International Society of Women Airline Pilots would like to invite you to apply for our Financial and Airline scholarships. The International Society of Women Airline Pilots is a group dedicated to assisting women who aspire to be airline pilots. Our scholarships are for advanced flight training.
    Financial scholarships are cash awards paid directly to a flight school or training institute. Financial awards are available for CFI, CFII, MEI, ME Commercial (SE Commercial required), or ATP. Financial applicants must have a Commercial certificate for airplanes, with an instrument rating or non-U.S. equivalent. ATP applicants only must have 1400TT and the ATP written test completed.
    Airline scholarships are donated by corporate and individual sponsors. Past awards have included B-737 type ratings, B-727 type ratings and B-727 engineer ratings. The availability of airline scholarships changes every year, so applicants are not able to apply for specific aircraft ratings. Once awarded, the aircraft type and corporate sponsor will be announced to the winner. Airline applicants must have an ATP rating, or non-U.S. equivalent, current Flight Engineer written complete, and a First Class Medical Certificate.
