Sacramento Valley chapter history
 

 

Charter Date: November, 16 1947

The Sacramento Valley chapter is located in the Sacramento area in California. Local airports for our members are Sacramento Executive, Davis University, Franklin Field, Natomas, and Mather.

The Sacramento Valley chapter was chartered on November 16, 1947 with 7 members. Bay Cities was the sponsoring chapter. Charter members at that time included Gerry Mickelson, Toni Jacobson, Doris Perkins, Edith Phipps, Coral Bloom, Dorothy Barden, Buth Rueckert, Ethel Sheehy, Jackie Bender and Wanda Branstetter.

Throughout the years, the chapter has been very active in Southwest Section with three members going on to become International President. They were Geraldine Mickelsen 1953, Barbara Sestito 1986, and Lois Erickson 1996.

Since 1947, our chapter has:

  • hosted the start of the last Powder Puff Derby in 1976. 200 airplanes took off at Sacramento
    Executive Airport. Five teams from Sacramento Valley chapter flew the race from Sacramento
    to Wilmington, Delaware.
  • airmarked many airports
  • hosted Southwest Section Meetings in 1969, 1983, and 1993
  • sponsored many "Flying Companion Seminars"
  • offered scholarship opportunities
  • help develop the Shirley's Angels Emergency Protocol

Today our chapter is working toward establishing a perpetual scholarship that will promote recurrency and safe flying.
