Reno High Sierra chapter history

Charter Date: April 7, 1989

HISTORY
Reno High Sierra chapter was chartered as the Nevada High Sierra Chapter in April, 1989. Reno High Sierra's 20 charter members spun off from the Reno Area chapter.

The young High Sierra chapter joined with 6 other small chapters, located in the Sierra Nevada area, to host the September 1991 Section meeting at the Hyatt at Lake Tahoe. The "Lucky 7" chapters as they called themselves were Nevada High Sierra, Lake Tahoe, Placer Gold, Jackson Gold Dust*, Cameron Park*, Grass Valley*, and Sierra Foothills* - [*= no longer chapters].

Our chapter has
        •       helped airmark Dayton Valley, NV in 1989
        •       held airplane washes for fundraising
        •       sponsored a poker circus
        •       worked at Hot August Nights in Reno for fundraising
        •       helped at the Checkered Flag Club at the Reno Air Races
        •       hosted a dinner for Albert Bresnik (Amelia Earhart's personal photographer)
        •       sponsored safety seminars
         •       airmarked 10 local airports in the past 7 years
         •       had monthly flyouts to various airports

In 1995, the chapter joined with Lake Tahoe and Reno Area chapters to host the start of the Air Race Classic, which went from Reno, NV to Huntington, WV.

In 1998, the chapter changed its name to Reno High Sierra because not many folks, even 99s International, knew where we were physically located!

In May 2000, we hosted the Southwest Section Spring meeting in Reno all by ourselves.

PRESENT
Every year, at the Reno Air Races, we work two sales booths. This activity earns us money for scholarships that we award each spring.

We have monthly flyouts for brunch, weather permitting. Some of our members have flown in the Palms to Pines air race, worked with Angel Flight, and are active at Air Sailing in NV. We take cookies to the tower at RNO, do airmarking of local airports, have an annual ski-a-thon day, and most of the things all other 99s chapters do.

Currently we have 40 members and mentor to 4 Future Women Pilots (FWPs).

We have 2 CFIs (one was a winner of an AE scholarship in 2005), 4 glider pilots who are also powered pilots, two professional pilots, a professor at ERAU, a float plane pilot and many members who have a deep love of flying and Ninety-Nines.

We traditionally meet at 7 pm on the fourth Thursday of every month at Sierra Air Center at 485 So. Rock Blvd. in Reno or you can contact us at www.renohighsierra99s.org to find out where we’re flying on our next monthly fly-out.

We are involved in various community events and endeavors locally and fund annual aviation scholarships for women with our fundraising efforts.
