Antelope Valley chapter history

Charter Date: September 20, 1988

20th Anniversary in 2008!

Antelope Valley is an exciting chapter with 33 members. The diverse chapter membership includes a former commercial airline pilot, an astronaut in the shuttle program, several military pilots, glider pilot, helicopter pilot, several women who have raced, others who work for NASA, and a former WASP.

We are fortunate to live and work in an active aviation environment.

The chapter changes officers every two years. Our chapter newsletter is called the SKYWORD.

The Antelope Valley chapter has established a successful scholarship program for local future women pilots. It also gives a small scholarship each year for a local junior college aviation student.

The Antelope Valley 99s actively supports the Southwest Section by attending semi-annual business meetings. It hosted the fall section meetings in 1995 and 2003! We support the efforts of the 99s International by contributing to its trusts and museums.

Chapter Activities:

Our St. Patrick’s Day Poker Run is held every spring, and it is a very successful scholarship fundraiser due to the fantastic prizes that are donated to us through our members’ efforts and our community’s generosity. 2005 will be our 15 th anniversary of this event!

Pilot Proficiency meetings are held every year in the Antelope Valley at local airports or member’s homes. These events are held to encourage our pilots to stay current, proficient, and knowledgeable of updated and new regulations.

We co-sponsor aviation safety seminars with the Fox Airport Association by providing refreshments. The Chapter also supports the annual Fox Old Fashioned Fly In and Pancake Breakfast.

The Chapter Christmas social is held the first weekend in December. A potluck buffet with a fund raiser auction makes this a fun chapter activity before the hectic holidays.

To show our appreciation for their efforts we give holiday cookies packages to airport staff and tower controllers in our area. This annual event is much appreciated and well received.

The chapter has an organized fly out calendar. Death Valley, Big Bear, Lone Pine, Woodlake, and Kernville are our favorite airports, so we try to go to every year.

In past years we have received numerous awards for airmarking, pilot proficiency, and aerospace education.

The Antelope Valley 99s enthusiastically encourages its members to participate in individual such as air races, writing newspaper articles, taking tours of FAA and aviation facilities, air show attendance, and giving talks at local schools and community events.
