Aloha chapter history

Charter Date: June 4, 1968

The State of Hawaii's only chapter (to date). This chapter was started up with a nucleus of "transplanted" 99s from mainland chapters plus new recruits. The chapter has a short early history from the late 1940s to the early 1950s.

The early group took part in the Civil Air Patrol air show on July 2, 1950 at Hickam Air Force Base. They flew pylon races competing for a trophy donated by Jacqueline Cochran. Attending the show were: June Johnson, Natalie MacDonald, Terry Thibodeau, Phyllis John, Stella Hardin, Mazel Wolf, Phebe DuGal, Vivian Hicks, Elaine Jones, Tommie Humpert, Marguerite Wood, and Betty Romaine.

One original member who renewed her 99s membership to join the chapter in 1972 is Vivian Page (Hicks).

The peculiarities of flying in the Islands makes flying in Hawaii distinctive from mainland flying--island hopping being the accepted cross-county activity.

Keeping in line with this uniqueness, the Aloha Chapter initiated a proficiency flying contest in 1970. Chapter charter member Dee Keaveny, with the help of Hawaiian language experts, named the race "Apuepuelele" (pronounced ah-poo-ay-poo-ay-lay-lay). The name means "contest in the sky." This annual fall event encompasses several islands and is open to other 99s.
